What a Tennis Point Spread Actually Measures
A tennis point spread assigns a game handicap to each side of a match. The favorite gives up games; the underdog receives them. If a spread reads -4.5 games for the favorite, that player must win by five or more games across the match for the spread bet to cash. Oddsmakers set these lines using head-to-head records, surface stats and recent form
— not guesswork. Grand Slam matches, which run best-of-five, carry wider spreads than best-of-three ATP 250 events because more games are in play. Always check which format a match uses before reading the number.
